What to Expect From Your First Adjustment.

What is an Adjustment?

Adjustments or Spinal Manipulation Therapy, (SMT) are administered to regions of the spinal column which have become displaced or fixated due to injury or disuse. These areas of spinal dysfunction may or may not produce pains. SMT is designed to rehabilitate normal movement and placement of these dysfunctional segments. The speed of recovery is dependent on several primary factors, such as how serious was the injury, (minor injuries tend to recover faster than major injuries). How long you have had the problem, (newer problems tend to recover faster than problems which have been present for a long time). Also, the general health of the individual will affect speed of recovery.

How Will the Adjustment Feel and How You Will Feel Afterward

When SMT is performed, you could expect to both hear and feel a releasing movement in the spinal column, which is essentially mobilizing fixations or subluxations - minor displacements. This adjustment procedure may be totally pain free or you may feel some momentary discomfort, this largely depends on your level of relaxation during the SMT or adjustment. Approximately 80% of my patients will feel an immediate improvement. This improvement will usually cause a 10 to 50% reduction in the symptoms which will last for hours to sometimes months, depending on how long you have had the problem.

It is not unusual for patients to feel soreness; approximately 20% of my patients may feel an increased soreness, as joints which have been fixated for long periods of time begin to move again. This can be considered a normal and expected part of the rehabilitation process. If increased pains are experienced, ice therapy combine with restful stretches will usually alleviate these symptoms. This reaction may continue for the first number of therapy sessions until these chronic fixated joints begin to move in a more normal fashion.
