It’s Your Back, You only Get One
It's your back, you only get one. This statement is said continually by chiropractors, as per their job, but is seems pretty obvious doesn't it? Unfortunately, many workers regularly place their backs in high risk situations, perhaps not realizing the dangers and future problems they bring upon themselves through poorly planned lifting habits, or prolonged exposure to repetitive back stress. To understand how injury occurs to your back, you first must understand the basics of human back anatomy:
The human spine is a highly complex bio-mechanical structure composed of 24 movable segments. It also houses a portion of the central nervous system called the spinal cord. The Spinal cord has 31 pairs of nerve roots that exit the spine at every segment. The spine is held together by a complex array of ligaments and discs, while also being supported by a complex arrangement of muscles and tendons.
In order for the spine to be healthy, all of these structures must work synergistically together. The spine
must be properly balanced in its posture, movement, and stability. Each of the 24 movable joints must have a normal range of motion and positioning, in relation to the segments on either side in order to stay healthy.
When injury occurs, disruption in spinal balance, positioning, and stability takes place. If this disruption in spinal bio-mechanics is not properly rehabilitated, dysfunction and rapid onset of degenerative pathology occurs.
As Chiropractors we are experts in the field of bio-mechanics. Restoring and maintaining a healthy spine is one of the things that chiropractors can help you best with. Simple rehab and behavioral modifications can help every person, old and young, to heal as quickly and comfortably after injury. Each and every chiropractor should take the time to better understand you and help you to learn the skills you need to heal and age as gracefully as possible when it comes to a back injury.
